When Akshay Kumar gave his award to Aamir Khan

Recently when Akshay Kumar was announced as the winner of National Award for his performance in Rustom, the jury headed by Priyadarshan, received a lot of flak for it. Many were of opinion that more than Akshay for Rustom, it was Manoj Bajpayee for Aligarh, Randeep Hooda for Sarabjit, Aamir Khan from Dangal or even a Shah Rukh Khan for Fan that deserved that award. What if I tell you that there is still a possibility that the award might go to Aamir Khan or Manoj Bajpayee, as the ceremony is still to be held. And you never know…Akshay Kumar might not accept it. Yes, it has happened in the past and may happen again. Confused? Let me make it clear. I am talking about 2009 when, at the Star Screen Award, Akshay Kumar was awarded for his performance in Singh Is Kinng and upon reaching the stage he refused to accept the award and went on to say that it was Aamir’s performance in Ghajini that deserved the award more than his own turn as Singh.
Other actors like Hrithik Roshan, John Abraham were left baffled when Akshay said, “Few days back I saw this movie Ghajini and I was bowled over. I saw my movie after that and I saw Singh Is Kinng again. I couldn’t help and compare my work with Aamir Khan’s and that’s when I knew without a doubt that the best actor this year by far according to me is Mr Aamir Khan for Ghajini. What that man did for his movies was pure dedication as they historic. And I refuse to be the man that pretends and take this away from him. I know this moment is never going to come again in my life but I cannot walk out from here holding something I know which doesn’t belong to me. I am sure I haven’t offended my people who voted for me. But I am still here striving for your love, for your support and may be one day I will win it back. It hurts me to say, it really does and I think, I thank you from all my heart but Aamir this one’s for you mate, you deserve it. So I would request you, it’ll be an honour if you can take this award because this belongs to you.”
